BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PHÚ-THO NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN SAIGON:
In the early 1900's, Vietnam did not have any schools that issued the Baccalaureate Degree (Tú-Tài),
the highest degree available at that time was the High School Diploma (Thành Chung).
If somebody wanted to obtain the Baccalaureate Degree, they had to attend French High School
with extremely hard conditions and these schools were very rare at the time.
Before 1909, the French Government opened the first three colleges for the native Vietnamese people. They
were:
1. National Administration College (Truong Hau Bo): 2-year curriculum.
2. Ecole De Medicine (Truong Thuoc): 4-year curriculum.
3. Civil Engineering College at Hanoi: 2-year curriculum.
The first Civil Engineering College in Hanoi was the idea of a French Engineer named Segas and
he was the first Director of the school. The students who graduated from this school at that time
were called "Agents Technique Des Travaux Publics" (Can Su Cong Chanh). Mr. Segas was the
Director of the school from 1909 until Mr. Pual Bergu replaced him in 1915. Mr. Pual Bergu
retired in 1926 and he was replaced by Mr. Girard temporarily. Mr. Connan held the
position after that.
During the years conflict between the Vietnamese and the French greatly changed a lot of things
in society, including the education. The French Government controlled the
number of Vietnamese students who could go to college. The French tried to redirect the young people toward things like sports
(especially soccer), music, games, etc... They tried to minimize the number of Vietnamese
people who wanted to go to higher education and they tried to destroy all of the Vietnamese Patriots.
But, they never could kill the spirit of TUAN, the symbolized Vietnamese young man
(Tuan, chang trai nuoc Viet). And believe me, nobody can.
In 1947, the college of Civil Engineering in Saigon, south of Vietnam, was
established. Its name was Ecole Superieure De Travaux Publics. The first director was Mr.
Guizo who, of course, was French. This first school was just a big two story house, located at
25 Chasseloup Laubat Street in Saigon. After that, the school relocated to a new building in the
same lot with the High School Petrus Ky' on Cong-Hoa street and the new principle was a Vietnamese
Professor Tran-Van-Bach.
In 1958, the Civil Engineering College was permanently located on Nguyen-Van-Thoai Street, had 4
year curriculum and a new name: "Phu-Tho National Technology Center". This Center consisted
of three engineering schools, originally: Civil, Electrical and Mechanical. The main language to
be used in the school still was French. The Director of this Center was a Vietnamese Civil Engineer
named Le-Si-Ngac and he also was the Civil Engineering Department Chairman.
After the 1975 political events, the school name changed to Bach-Khoa University. I and a lot of
friends of ACC74 in this Forum graduated in 1979. In July
of 1998, I had a chance to visit the school and I was very surprised that the name of
the University has changed back to Phu-Tho Technology Center.
Most Vietnamese Engineers who graduated from our school became excellent
Engineers wherever he or she went, in Vietnam or elsewhere in the world. Several of those included were Mr.
Pho-Duc-Chinh (Can Su Cong Chanh, 1927),
Mr. Phan-Van-Hum (Can Su Cong Chanh, 1922), Mr. Nguyen-Hien-Le (Can Su Cong Chanh, 1934), and so on...
Hi, you guys:
Because of the developments in our country,
we - the class of Tu-Tai IBM - are living in Vietnam as well as around the world.
Many others are in the United States, some are in Canada, Australia, Germany,
France, England,.... and most of our class are still living in Vietnam, our lovely country.
However, we are all here now
on this website. We can talk through E-mail, & we can see each other in pictures on websites such as this one.
We can travel to visit family sometimes.
Thanks Internet! Cheers!!!
